HOW TO TAKE A WALK IN THE ERA OF SOCIAL DISTANCING, A Step-by-Step Guide :: SPRING 2020

Like many in Spring 2020, my family was confronted with an increasingly isolated lifestyle necessitated by a global pandemic, and regulated by the Pennsylvania Governor’s ‘stay-at-home’ orders. Forced to retreat to our home for most life functions, the time I spent outdoors with my partner and children was crucial in maintaining mental stability while we ‘stayed-at-home’. Socially distant, daily walks in any direction allowed for fresh air; renewed exploration of our neighborhood as the seasons changed; and time and space to wander physically and mentally.

As a photographer I used the camera to record our activities, and recognize how our walks manifest themselves visually and in my mind. From those photos I developed an online guide and zine: How to Take a Walk in the Era of Social Distancing, A Step-by-Step Guide. At once satirical and serious, the guide was a mechanism to process and share insights gleaned from our walks, and provide suggestions on how to approach our new, if temporary, daily existence, with clarity, empathy, and humor.

The guide was available online and on your mobile device, or as a printed zine (available on request).
